Noa at the FAO Telefood TV Show in Spain (Spain)

A major five-hour broadcast event aired live worldwide by the Spanish television group RTVE on 19 November to raise funds on behalf of TeleFood and broaden public awareness about global hunger was an overwhelming success.

Over 8 000 people called in credit card donations totalling 585 00 euros during this year's RTVE "TeleFood Gala," and that figure will rise as contributions made by wire transfer are also tallied.

The gala – the seventh such broadcast sponsored by RTVE since TeleFood's launch in 1997 -- featured performances by a number of famed international musicians, including FAO goodwill ambassador Noa, Joan Manuel Serrat, Gloria Estefan, Miguel Bosé, Chenoa, Alex Ubago, La Oreja de Van Gogh and Atomic Kitten.

TV personalities Inés Ballester, José Ribagorda, Miguel Ángel Tobías and María San Juan hosted the show, and Spain's Minister of Agriculture, Miguel Arias Cañete, and FAO Deputy Director-General David Harcharik also participated.

Donations were handled by Spain's Banesto and Fundación Telefónica, the gala's two main cosponsors. Those still interested in making donations can do so up to 24 November by calling Fundación Telefónica (tel. +34 9 0210 0318) or making a direct money transfer to Banesto (acct. no. FAO 7270).

Through events such as the RTVE gala, TeleFood harnesses the talent of international celebrities in order to help the world's neediest communities help themselves. Donations are directly invested in small, self-sustaining agriculture, livestock and fisheries projects that help poor families in food-insecure regions produce more to eat.

FAO and partners like RTVE, Fundación Telefónica and Banesto have teamed up with hundreds of concerned international celebrities under the TeleFood banner since 1997 to reduce world hunger.
