Noa's concert in New York (USA)
Known in Israel by her given name Achinoam Nini, Noa is Israel's leading international concert and recording artist. Born in Tel- Aviv in 1969, Noa lived in NYC from age 2 until her return to Israel alone at the age of 17. Her family is originally from Yemen. After serving the mandatory two years in the Israeli Army in a military entertainment unit, Noa studied music at the Rimon School where she met her long-time musical partner and collaborator, guitarist Gil Dor. Noa will be joined on stage by Gil and the Yoed Nir String Quartet. They will perform songs from Noa's recent hit album The Israeli Song Book, as well as her own hit songs.
Noa's strongest influences come from the singer-songwriters of the 60s, like Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. These musical and lyrical sensibilities, combined with Noa's Yemenite roots and Gil Dor's strong background in Jazz, Classical and Rock, have created Noa and Gil's unique sound, manifested in hundreds of songs written and performed together. Noa plays percussion, guitar and piano.

Noa's performance at the World Food Prize Award Ceremony in Des Moines, Iowa (USA)
THE WORLD FOOD PRIZE LAUREATE AWARD CEREMONY is held in the magnificent Iowa State Capitol Building in Des Moines. The ceremony rivals that of the Nobel Prize, drawing over 800 people from more than 75 countries.
Each year, world-class performers take the stage to honor the World Food Prize Laureate. Past performers have included Ray Charles, John Denver, Chachi Tadesse, and Kathak Gunjan. Following the Ceremony, the celebration continues at the Laureate Award Dinner, held in the Capitol Rotunda.
The 2012 Laureate Award Ceremony honoring Dr. Daniel Hillel will take place on Thursday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. The event will be broadcast live on Iowa Public Television and available for viewing online around the globe at www.worldfoodprize.org/webcast.
Highlights this year include a special appearance and presentation by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and musical performances by Israel's international pop super-star Noa, and the Bryant Park Quartet

Influenced by her Yemenite roots and singer-songwriters of the '60s, Noa is Israel's leading international concert and recording artist. She plays percussion, guitar and piano, co-wrote the lyrics to the theme for the film, Life Is Beautiful, and is the recipient of WEF Crystal and Dove of Peace awards. Palestinian actress, singer and songwriter, Mira Awad, was born in Galilee and is a Goodwill Ambassador of Peace and devoted advocate of women's rights. Following numerous collaborations with international artists, her debut album, Bahlawan-Acrobat, was released in May 2009. Most recently representing Israel in the 2009 Eurovision contest, Noa and Awad tour to express, musically, their belief in the power of dialogue to promote peace and understanding.

In 1994, Noa performed her version of Ave Maria for a live audience of 100,000 and a TV audience of millions at the culmination event of the "Year of the Family" at the Vatican, witnessed by Pope John Paul II. She performed during the Jubilee in the year 2000, before the Pope and an audience of 500,000 students, together with Alanis Morissette, Lou Reed, Gerarad Depardieu, Dave Stewart and Andrea Bocelli. In March 1999, Noa sang for President Clinton at the White House. Noa studied music at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Israel and the Rimon Music School where she met her long-time partner and collaborator Gil Dor. Over the span of their 15 year career together, Gil and Noa have written and produced successful international and Israeli albums. Mira Awad is an Israeli Arab singer, actress and songwriter. She has collaborated with Sting, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Sheryl Crow, George Benson, Jhonny Clegg, Zucherro, Peter Maffay, Pino Daniele, Rita Marcotulli and many more. She has performed in numerous venues around the world including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Rome's Colloseum, Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland and the Water Festival in Stockholm. Noa helped write the lyrics for Nicola Piovani's musical theme for Roberto Benigni's Oscar award winning movie "Life Is Beautiful" and collaborated with French composer Eric Serra on The Experience of Love from the James Bond film "Goldeneye" and My Heart Calling from the Luc Besson film "Joan of Arc."

Larry Fine’s tenure at the Jewish Federation, the central planning, community relations and fund raising body for the Jewish community, has been notable for its enhanced consensus among Jewish leadership and community partners, and by successful fund raising, including the 2006 Israel Emergency Campaign and special campaigns on behalf of Soviet and Ethiopian Jewish immigration. Among many other achievements, The Federation, with Fine at the helm, has enhanced support and programming for families and teens; the Federation introduced “public space” Judaism, hosting Jewish community events in public institutions. Fine has overseen two successful demographic studies that have helped chart the community’s course. He is highly sought after as a media spokesperson on issues concerning the Jewish community and speaks widely on Israel and the Middle East on area campuses and for church and civic groups.

Their four international albums are "Noa" (produced by Pat Metheny) and "Calling" (produced by Rupert Hine) for Geffen records, "Blue Touches Blue" (produced by Mike Hedges) for Mercury records and "Now" (produced by Gil Dor & Yoad Nevo) for Universal Music. In addition, Noa has recorded a live album with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and a live cd and dvd with The Solis String Quartet. There are also various compilations available. The songwriting duo have sold over a million and a half copies of their current catalogue.
Duets and Collaborations
Noa has toured and sang with rock superstar Sting, performed her song "Child of man" with Stevie Wonder for a CBS TV special in the US, and shared the stage and microphone with many great artists, including Carlos Santana, Sheryl Crow, George Benson, Jhonny Clegg, Zucherro, Peter Maffay, Pino Daniele, Rita Marcotulli, Massimo Ranieri, Carlo Fava, Florent Pagny, Jean Jaques Goldman, Lokua Kanza, Jorge Drexler, Joan Manuel Serrat, Miguel Bose, Donovan, Maurane, Eric Serra, Pascal Obispoe, Patrique Bruel, Mike Manieri, Al Dimeola and Bustan Avraham.
The Ensemble
Noa and Gil have had various different ensembles since their early days as an acoustic duet. Their most long lived musical relationship has been with the extraordinary percussionist Zohar Fresco. The three of them have played hundreds of concerts together all over the world. Recently Noa and Gil have added the wonderful Solis String Quartet to their stage show. The meeting between the Israeli trio and the Neapolitan quartet has brought a wonderful new dimension to Noa and Gil's music.
Nini is a singer who tries to enjoy both the worlds of popular and classical music.But as Nini puts it, "there is an intrinsic connection between the music of Gil [Dor, her ongoing musical partner] and myself in our pop activities and classical music. We didn't have to bend our songs. It is a most natural extension."
Is this extension indeed that natural? Does it make sense to hear Nini sing with a full symphony orchestra? Does it makes sense for her to perform this way? As a matter of fact, nothing could be more natural. And those who attended the special Sasha Argov concert organized by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra several years ago, have already seen that Nini can be at her most natural with a full symphony orchestra backing her up.

One of Israel's most popular female singers will appear at the Wharton Center tonight.
She's an Israeli Jew who goes by the single name of Noa. On her current tour, she's sharing the stage with Arab-Israeli singer Mira Awad.
WKAR's Scott Pohl spoke with both Noa and Mira Awad about their musical and political collaboration.
AUDIO: Noa was born in Tel Aviv, but she grew up in New York City. Along with her Israeli and American roots, she also was influenced by her Yemenite parents. Her music appeared in the James Bond film "Goldeneye", and she wrote the lyrics for the theme to the Oscar-winning "Life is Beautiful".
Noa says her connection with Mira Awad can be attributed to having had similar musical influences, despite their cultural differences.
"Both of us are very deeply inspired by the singer-songwriters of the 60s," Noa explains, "like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Paul Simon. Mira, when she plays and sings, I always think that she sounds like an Arabic Joan Baez. It's very, very beautiful, what she does. And then, we have our duets together. We sing together in three languages: English, Hebrew, and Arabic, and that's the show. That's what people are in for."
FIRST DUET ALMOST TEN YEARS AGO
In 2001, already a star in Israel, Noa wanted a partner for a duet on the Beatles song "We Can Work It Out". That's when she first reached out to Mira Awad. Flattered by the opportunity to sing with Noa, Awad accepted, and she says there was an instant connection.
"We really enjoy the company of each other on stage," Awad says. "Our voices complement each other the way that I never encountered before. And, of course, we connect on the philosophical and spiritual and idealistic level, which is even more important when you want to keep a friendship going on, because something's deeper there."
Awad says Israeli Palestinians are exposed to a lot of music rooted in the nation's Jewish society, but the reverse doesn't happen as much. She hopes that her work with Noa will change that.
"We have little means of broadcasting our own stuff," explains Awad. "I mean, we have one radio that is nationwide, only one radio, and there are slots on the TV that allow some programs and some stuff in Arabic, but it's very limited. So, yes, even if they wanted to, they have to really, really look for it in order to be exposed to our culture."
EUROVISION SONG CONTEST WAS PIVOTAL
Their biggest project to date was jointly representing Israel in the hugely popular Eurovision song contest, televised to millions of viewers around the world. The song "There Must Be Another Way" has a lyric that Noa finds particularly poignant.
"When I cry, I cry for both of us," Noa quotes from the song. "My pain has no name. When I cry, I cry to the merciless sky and say there must be another way. And this is what we believe, both of us. We believe that only if we share each other's pain, if we feel true empathy towards each other and reach out, can we find a solution to our problems."
Tonight's Noa concert with Mira Awad will begin at 7:30 at the Wharton Center's Great Hall.
