Noa at the press conference to present the solidarity concert against Alzheimer to be held in Barcelona on September 2013

La cantant catalana Sílvia Pérez Cruz s'ha sumat a l'elenc artístic del concert benèfic organitzat per la Fundació Pasqual Maragall per al pròxim 28 de setembre contra l'Alzheimer, en què participaran Joan Manuel Serrat, Noa, Miguel Poveda i Bárbara Hendricks, segons ha anunciat aquest dimecres l'organització en roda de premsa.

   L'artista ha explicat que la seva participació en el concert ha arribat més tard que la resta, quan l'organització li va preguntar si li vindria de gust formar part de l'espectacle i ella ha confirmat la seva assistència: "Les vaig dir que encantada de la vida, i aquí estic", ha expressat.

   "Jo sóc la que fa menys temps que conec Pasqual Maragall, però em sento com de la família", ha dit l'artista, que ha mostrat la seva admiració per la resta de cantants del recital.

   L'espectacle, que tindrà una durada d'unes dues hores, tindrà la participació de l'Orquestra Sinfònica del Vallès i amb duos com forma de transició entre els artistes, tot i que aquests encara no es poden revelar "per evitar decepcions", ha fet broma el director musical, Joan Albert Amargós, qui ha apuntat que aquests números li donaran un aire diferent al concert.

   El director artístic, Manuel Huerga, ha assegurat que Serrat ha exercit com un verdader mestre de cerimònia en aquest concert, mentre que el cantautor ha explicat que s'ha avançat bastant en l'organització del concert i només falta acabar de determinar com es relacionaran els artistes entre ells.

Silvia Pérez Cruz se une al cartelón del concierto solidario contra el alzhéimer. Hoy se ha hecho oficial la noticia y la foto de famila, casi completa. Solo ha faltado la soprano Barbara Hendricks, "que se ha quedado en Madrid, ¡cómo tantas cosas!", soltó Joan Manuel Serrat en clara alusión política. Los impulsores del recital, Pasqual Maragall y su mujer Diana Garrigosa, vicepresidenta de la fundación que lleva el nombre del expolítico y a donde irá a parar la recaudación del recital solidario, concretaron con los artistas la dinámica de la actuación que acogerá el Palau Sant Jordi el próximo 28 de septiembre, antes del encuentro con la prensa.

Serrat fue el primero en tomar la palabra, aclarando que "no es un concierto más, porque las razones que lo impulsan son muy concretas y nos afectan a todos". Pérez Cruz relató como fue su fichaje: "Me preguntaron, '¿te gustaría cantar?'. Y yo contesté, pero no quiero molestar. Solo si va bien. De lo contrario iré a ver el recital". Y el director musical de la actuación, Joan Albert Amargós, aportó detalles sobre en qué consistirá el show.

CLÍMAX CONJUNTO

"Cada uno de los artistas hará su propio repertorio, de unos 15 minutos, y luego vendrán los encuentros entre ellos, que serán lo que convertirán el concierto en algo mágico. Habrá duetos, que ellos mismos eligirán con temas con los que se sientan cómodos, y un clímax final con todos en el escenario", explicó el compositor y arreglista. La Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès estará presente durante toda la actuación.

Manuel Huerga, el director artístico, subrayó que Serrat ha adquirido indiscutiblemente "el papel dehost, de maestro de ceremonias" y que su misión es tan solo "que todo fluya de manera espontánea. Lo único que he de hacer es no estropearlo -bromeó-. Que la música sea la que hable". Y adelantó que la escenografía será "sobría", pero "elegante", acorde con los participantes.

La cantante israelí Noa aseguró que el motivo para participar en este encuentro es ahondar en la investigación de la mente, donde se hallan "todas las conexiones del sistema humano", lo que nos hace bellamente imperfectos. Mientras que Miguel Poveda quiso recordar el eslógan del concierto: "la respuesta al alzhéimer está en la música".

 Huerga ha assenyalat queno tindrà una posada en escena espectacular ni caracteritzada pel malbaratament, sinó que serà més aviat sòbria, maca i elegant, digna de la talla dels artistes, protagonitzada per un gran cervell: "És el cervell el que tenen la resposta de la música", ha resumit.

   Noa ha assegurat que els seus motius per participar en el concert és aprofundir en la investigació de la ment, on estan "totes les connexions del sistema humà", el que ens fa bellament imperfectes, ha dit.

   Alhora, Poveda ha remarcat el valor curatiu de la música, i ha mostrat la seva esperança que aquest concert permeti donar resposta a "el terrible" d'aquesta malaltia, mentre que Bárbara Hendricks no ha participat en la roda de premsa al trobar-se fora de Barcelona aquest dimecres.

   La dona de Pasqual Maragall, Diana Garrigosa, ha insistit que serà un concert diferent per a un cas particular: el de la seva fundació que no parteix de cap patrimoni, i que està fent molts esforços per recaptar diners per a la investigació contra l'Alzheimer.

   Malgrat que ja ha començat a funcionar, l'objectiu últim de la fundació és "trobar i mantenir" equips pluridisciplinaris per avançar en la investigació contra aquesta malaltia, que la ciència segueix sense saber cap a on va, ha lamentat.

"דווקא היה רגע אופטימי אחד החודש. אני שמחה שלפיד ושליט נכנסו לפוליטיקה. שמעתי שנועם שליט ספג הרבה ביקורת, ואפשר אולי להבין את זה, אבל מהיכרותי איתו הוא טיפוס מיוחד, בבחינת מים שקטים שחודרים עמוק. כל עוד הוא הולך לצד הנכון של המפה ולא לפשיסטים, אני בעדו. האווירה הפוליטית במדינה כל-כך נוראה ואיומה, שזה טוב בעיניי. אני והחברים השפויים שלי, ואני שמה גם את נועם ואת לפיד על אותו צד של המפה, כולנו אנשים שבגדול רק רוצים לחיות את חייהם פה בשקט".

- יאיר לפיד כבר קיבל איומים על חייו.

"אבל נראה לי שסוף-סוף מבינים פה שזה עכשיו או אף פעם, גם אם זה גובה מחיר אישי, חייבים לעשות את זה או שמאבדים את המדינה. המצב שלנו כבר כל-כך גרוע שחייב לבוא שינוי. חייבים שהרוב הדומם והמותש יפסיק לחשוב שאם הוא לא יעשה כלום, הכול יהיה בסדר.

"קשה לי להבין איך מאות אלפים היו מוכנים לצאת לרחובות על מחיר של גבינה ולא על מחיר של מדינה. אנחנו בעיצומו של מאבק מהותי על המדינה. איפה כל האנשים שאכפת להם? תראי איזה נס קרה לנו מכמה אוהלים שהוקמו כאן רק לפני 60 שנה. מי שטס ורואה את ההבדל בין ישראל לירדן לא מאמין. אבל איך מדינה שקמה מאנשים שעברו את השואה מתנהגת בצורה שמזכירה אפילו בקצת את מה שחווינו? זו טרגדיה עצומה בעיניי. איך קרה שהפכנו מילד מוכה לאב מכה?

"מדינת ישראל סימנה לעצמה 3 מטרות כשהיא הוקמה: עלייה, בנייה וביטחון. העלינו כבר כמעט את כולם; התמלאנו, בנינו; יש לנו צבא חזק ופצצת אטום. עכשיו צריך להתפנות לעסוק במהותה של המדינה. זה השלב הקריטי שבו אנחנו נמצאים היום, ולכן טוב שיש את נועם ויאיר ושיש את שלי ואת ציפי לבני.

ניני, בת 43, התפרסמה בעולם כאמנית פופ ומוזיקת עולם, כזמרת וכמלחינה. היא נולדה בארץ, בגיל שנתיים עברה לניו-יורק בעקבות מלגת לימודים שקיבל אביה, וגדלה בבית דתי ציוני ברובע הברונקס. הצטרפותה בגיל 15 לשבט צופי "צבר" בניו-יורק חיזקה בה את הזיקה לעברית, לישראל ולציונות. בגיל 17 הגיעה לבדה לארץ, כשבכוונתה לשהות פה כשנה, אך אז הכירה את רופא הילדים ד"ר אשר ברק, לימים בעלה ואב 3 ילדיה, והחליטה לעשות עלייה. כעבור מספר שנים החליטו הוריה לחזור בעקבותיה לישראל.

בבית-הספר למוזיקה רימון הכירה את גילי דור, ומאז הם עובדים יחד עם אמנים מכל העולם, וביניהם גם פט מתיני, שפתח בפניה את הדלת לקריירה בינלאומית עם האלבום הראשון, "Noa" (מאז היא נקראת כך בהופעותיה בחו"ל). ביצוע מהאלבום ל"אווה מריה" של באך גרר הזמנה להופיע בפני האפיפיור בוותיקן, הישראלית הראשונה שזכתה בכבוד הזה. ברזומה שלה גם הופעות עם סטינג, סטיבי וונדר, שריל קרואו, אנני לנוקס וכתיבת המילים למוזיקה של שיר הנושא בסרטו של רוברטו בניני "החיים יפים".

האג'נדה הפוליטית השמאלנית המובהקת הובילה אותה להופעות בפני אישים פוליטיים כדוגמת ביל קלינטון, בהופעה שערכה בבית הלבן לכבוד יום הולדתו של רבין המנוח. "תמיד הייתי קשורה לארגוני שלום, אבל הפעילות המסיבית שלי התחילה אחרי רצח רבין. האירוע הזה הוא המהפך האמיתי בחיי. הייתי אז האמנית הבכירה היחידה שהסכימה ששמה יופיע על לוחות המודעות שקראו להשתתפות בעצרת. עמדתי לצדו על הבמה ורק כמה דקות לפני הרצח סיימתי לשיר.

"אני רואה את מה שאני עושה כסוג של שליחות. חשוב לי להגיע לחו"ל ולהשמיע את הקול האחר. משרד החוץ עושה דבר אחד, אני שגרירה מסוג אחר. אין ראיון עיתונאי איתי שהוא לא פוליטי, אני מתכוננת טוב טוב לכל ראיון ולעולם לא אתן נשק בידיים של אנשים שבאמת יש להם אנטי למדינה הזאת. יש היום באירופה שנאה גדולה לישראל. בסין, לעומת זאת, יש אהבה והערכה עצומה כלפינו, ואני באמת לא מבינה למה אנחנו לא חותרים לסין גם מבחינה עסקית".

- למה את לא מתמקדת במוזיקה בלבד, מה את צריכה את כאב הראש הזה?

"יש מספיק שאומרים לי שאני זמרת ושלא אשתמש בבמה להביע את דעותיי. אני עושה אינסוף דברים בעד השלום, ובכל זאת היו ויש הפגנות פרו-פלסטיניות מול ההופעות שלי ואמבושים על האתרים שלי - מפציצים לי אותם עד שהם נופלים. לא משנה להם שאני אדם שחרת על דגלו שלום. עבורם אני ישראלית, ועד שאני לא שורפת את הדרכון שלי, אני נשארת כזו. אני רוצה לחיות בתוך העולם, אני רק לא בטוחה שזה מה שנתניהו רוצה, אני גם לא רואה אותו עושה את זה".

- נראה שהנושא הפלסטיני כמעט לא על הפרק. ביבי טרוד במאבקים אחרים.

"הבעיה הכי גדולה שלי עם נתניהו היא שבכלל לא אכפת לו מהמדינה. אולי אכפת לו מעצמו ומהמשרה, אבל לא מהמדינה. הייתי לוקחת כבר בשתי ידיים את בגין במקומו. אני לא מחזיקה מנתניהו אדם בר-דעת. הוא הרי רואה מה קורה סביבו ומה קורה בזירה הבינלאומית - וממשיך בדרכו.

"נכון שהיו כמה נקודות אור כמו נאום בר-אילן, אבל כמה אדם יכול לקשקש ולא לעמוד מאחורי דבריו? קראתי שאומרים עליו שהוא סוג של גאון. הגאונות שלו מתבטאת בזה שאף אחד לא באמת יודע מה הוא חושב, וזה מה שמשאיר אותו בשלטון.

"יש לי מעט מאוד כבוד לאנשים שהוא הכניס לממשלה, אני חסרת תקווה מממשלה כזו. אכפת לו רק מהכיסא שלו, הוא לא יכול לצפות לקבל ממני איזו תמיכה לטעויות שהוא כבר עשה. הייתי קמה ומריעה לו בקול גדול אם הוא היה עושה שלום של אמיצים כמו שעשה בגין. צריך אומץ לעשות שלום יותר מכל דבר אחר, ואין לו את האומץ הזה, ואגב, זו סיבה טובה שתהיה לנו ראש ממשלה אישה ולא גבר. נשים יותר אמיצות.

לפני כחודש נחתם הסכם בין מועדון הכדורגל של ברצלונה לבין התנועה לקידום השלום, קשר שנוצר בתיווכה של ניני. מאמן הקבוצה, פפ גווארדיולה, נחשף לדף הפייסבוק שעליו מתנהלת מרבית פעילות התנועה, ונרתם לפעילות בעצמו. בקיץ האחרון הוא הגיע לארץ כדי לצפות בהופעה של ניני, שנחשבת ידידתו האישית, במסגרת פסטיבל ישראל בירושלים.

"לקחתי אותו לסיור בארץ, לא רציתי סתם למכור לו את הסיפור שלנו, אלא שיראה במו עיניו. מבחינתי זו ציונות להעביר סוף שבוע כזה עם מי שיש לו השפעה על דעת הקהל בארצו ובעולם, שבו הוא רואה את המורכבות שלנו. מה שרואים פה זו לא אותה תמונה מעוותת שמראים בחוץ, ומי שרואה את זה לא שואל אותי יותר למה אני חוזרת לשדה הקרב בכל פעם שאני על מטוס בדרך חזרה לכאן".

דרוש: טייקון

בימים אלה עורכת ניני סיבוב הופעות עם דור, בעקבות צאתו לאור של אלבום הקלאסיקות שלה "ארץ, שיר". אפשר היה לחשוב שזה זמן של קצת נחת. "להפך. אני מודאגת, מוטרדת ובעיקר עצובה מכך שלא מבינים עד כמה עסקי המוזיקה נמצאים פה במצב של קריסה. כל המצב השתנה. המוזיקה הגיעה לאינטרנט ובלחיצת כפתור מניידים אותה ושומעים במיליוני אתרים. אנשים לא קונים יותר דיסקים, מה שנשאר לאמנים אלה הופעות, וגם בשטח הזה זה רק נהיה יותר ויותר קשה".

- מה הפתרון?

"פשוט מאוד. לחזור לתקופת שושלת המדיצ'ים. לרוזנים ולאפיפיורים שתמכו באמנים. היום, כדי להמשיך ליצור, אמן חייב פטרון עשיר שיטפח אותו כמו שטיפחו את מוצרט. אמנם הדבר הזה הוא סוג של חרב פיפיות, כי תראה לי מי החברים שלך ואומר לך מי אתה, אבל היום יותר מתמיד יש לעסקים אינטרס להיות מחוברים לאמנות".

"רק לאחרונה מצאתי ספונסר, שמבקש להישאר בעילום שם, ששמע שלא הצלחתי לגייס תמיכה לסיבוב הופעות, ותמך בפרויקט הזה. עכשיו גם חתמתי, כאמן הישראלי הראשון, על שיתוף-פעולה עם יקב, שייתן לי חסות לפרויקטים מסויימים. המצב נואש, נקודה. דנקנר ואי.די.בי תמכו בנו בהופעות בסין והחברה עושה הרבה דברים טובים בשביל האמנות, כמו בניית היכל התרבות במעלות תרשיחא. יש עוד תורמים, אבל אני לא רוצה לנקוב בשמות, כי אני לא בטוחה שהם רוצים. אני כל הזמן עסוקה בגיוס.

"הכול הפך זמין וזול, גם ילד בן 5 יכול היום להפיק שיר בקלות. נעשה צפוף גם בעולם. נגמרו הזמנים שבהם הרולינג סטונז היו יוצאים להופעות פעם ב-5 שנים וביתר הזמן מוכרים תקליטים. היום גם מדונה וליידי גאגא נלחמות על הקיום שלהן. הזירה הבינלאומית מגיעה לישראל, ועל הדולר הבודד של מי שרוצה לראות הופעה יש תחרות קשה. בשביל לשרוד מורידים רמה והולכים למכנה המשותף הנמוך ביותר, והאמנות נפגעת מזה. לכן, לאמנות ברמה גבוהה, שלא רוצה למכור את נשמתה לשטן, כמעט ואין היום אפשרות להתקיים".

- בכל זאת ריטה דורשת ומקבלת 60 אלף שקל להופעה, וגם את דורשת לא מעט עבור ההופעות שלך.

"מה את יודעת על הוצאות של הופעה וכמה נשאר לאמן? אמן שרוצה לשמור על רמה גבוהה לא הולך לכל חתונה כמו הרבה מחברינו הטובים. אמן שמכבד את האמנות שלו מופיע פעם בחודש, ואם את גם רוצה לקבל את ה-60 אלף שקל להופעה, את צריכה להיות ראויה לזה, ואת לא יכולה להיות ראויה לזה אם את מופיעה בכל קרן רחוב. יש כאן מעגל קסמים מקומם. מי שמרוויח כסף רב מאוד אלה האמנים המזרח תיכוניים שמופיעים כל ערב בחתונה או בר מצווה וממלאים את קיסריה. זה נהיה הסטטוס קוו בכל מקום, וזה מעציב אותי מאוד".

- את אומרת שאם לא תמצאי ספונסר את עלולה להפסיק לשיר? שהאמנות שלך תלויה בתרומות?

"חד-משמעית. אני מצליחה לגייס כסף לפרויקטים מסוימים בגלל שמי שעוקב אחרי הקריירה שלי מבין את ה'למה' שלי. אני מכוונת את השירה שלי למקום מאוד גבוה, המוזיקה שלי מקרבת אנשים, שוברת מחיצות ושפות ויוצרת שיתופי-פעולה. למוזיקה יש ערך אמיתי לנפש האדם, היא לא רק מוזיקת 'בוגי' שעושה טוב.

"מוזיקת 'בוגי' היא כיפית ונהדרת, רק שלרוב מה שנכלל ב'סבבה' יש סכנה. דווקא מוזיקה כמו של ליאונרד כהן, ג'וני מיטשל והביטלס תיעלם, ותישאר רק המוזיקה שהמטרה שלה למצוא חן בעיני האנשים - לזה צריך עזרה. הגענו למצב שללא אביר על סוס לבן, המוזיקה תיעלם. כרגע אנחנו כבר בכאוס של אחרי הפיצוץ. אני בהחלט חוששת לעתיד".

Noa attends "El Hormiguero" Tv Show (Spain)

El Hormiguero de ayer fue un programa musical, con la visita de la cantante israelí Noa, que cantó en directo su emotiva versión del Ave María. Pablo Motos le presento a Chavi Lozano, que crea instrumentos de viento con aparatos impensables para hacer música.

Por último, apareció Carlos Jean con su Plan B solventando un apagón en el plató con la intervención en directo de los artistas que han colaborado en el tema de El Hormiguero. El Pescao y Noa se unieron a la fiesta.

El Hormiguero obtuvo ayer uno de sus mejores datos de audiencia, un 8.9% de share y 1.975.000 espectadores.

Noche inolvidable en El Hormiguero con la visita de Noa. La cantante israelí dejó momentos mágicos con música como telón de fondo. Las hormigas conocimos el poder que tiene la música para emocionar. Tan sólo hace falta un poco de talento, y de eso, Noa anda sobrada. El programa de ayer fue musical y emotivo de principio a fin.

Para empezar, Pablo Motos experimentó que todos llevamos un instrumento de percusión dentro. Aunque el de Noa, de momento, es el que mejor suena. Por si esto fuera poco, Noa cantó en directo su emotiva versión del Ave María. A Pablo, le faltó poco para llorar con la voz de la israelí. Para compensar, Pablo le presento a Chavi Lozano, que crea instrumentos de viento con aparatos impensables para hacer música. Noa alucinaba.

Pero ya flipamos todos, cuando apareció Carlos Jean con su Plan B solventando un apagón en el plató con la intervención en directo de los artistas que ha colaborado en el temazo del Hormiguero. El Pescao y Noa se unieron a la fiesta. IMPRESIONANTE.

La cantante Noa arranca con 'Santa Lucía', cantado en exclusiva para ELMUNDO.es su último álbum, 'Noapoles' (Sony). Un homenaje a Italia, donde lleva actuando más de 18 años.

En este disco, Noa canta las canciones -populares- en el dialecto de la ciudad de Nápoles, en hebreo y, también, en español. Una especie de agradecimiento a la ciudad, a la que viajó por primera vez a los 14 años. "Creí que había llegado el momento de devolver al público de ese país todo el cariño que me ha dado", apunta la cantante, que representó a Israel en el festival de Eurovisión de 2009.

"Empecé interpretando estas canciones en los bises de mis conciertos", explica la cantante israelí. "Yo no suelo hacer versiones", añade, pero esta vez sentí la necesidad porque son unas canciones preciosas, con un atractivo universal".

Y así, con su voz privilegiada, Noa deleita a los lectores con esta interpretación en español de 'Santa Lucía'. Eso sí, todos los que quieran disfrutar de su música en directo, la artista estará este jueves en Madrid y el sábado en Barcelona.

Yo creo que es la gente que se descarga la musica ilegalmente la que se tiene que hacer esa pregunta, es un tema de conciencia como todo. Por mi parte siempre me alegra que mi musica llegue al corazon de la gente independientemente de la via.

Achinoam Nini and Mira Awad are set to represent Israel as a duo in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Musical show of unity upsets many in Israel By Ethan Bronner Published: February 24, 2009 TEL AVIV: Achinoam Nini, a singer and peace activist, has long stirred controversy here. Known abroad by her stage name, Noa, she has recorded with Arab artists, refused to perform in the occupied West Bank, condemned Israeli settlements there and had concerts canceled because of bomb threats from the extreme right. But lately it is the left that has been angry with Nini. Chosen by Israel to represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest — this year being held in Moscow in May with an expected television audience of 100 million — Nini asked if she could bring along her current artistic collaborator, an Israeli Arab singer, Mira Awad. The selection committee liked the idea of having both Arab and Jewish citizens in the contest for the first time. But coinciding as it did with Israel's Gaza war and the rise of Avigdor Lieberman, the ultranationalist politician who threatens Israeli Arabs with a loyalty oath, the committee's choice was labeled by many on the left and in the Arab community as an effort to prettify an ugly situation. A petition went around demanding that the duo withdraw, saying they were giving the false impression of coexistence in Israel and trying to shield the nation from the criticism it deserved. It added, "Every brick in the wall of this phony image allows the Israeli Army to throw 10 more tons of explosives and more phosphorus bombs." Neither Nini, 39, nor Awad, 33, has been deterred. But since they consider themselves peace advocates, they are a bit surprised. The antiwar movement, they say, seems to have turned into a Hamas apology force. That, together with the political turn rightward in Israel, means that while the two are being sent to represent this mixed and complex society, they also feel a bit orphaned by it. "I am so worried by the drift to the extremes on both the Israeli and Palestinian sides," Awad said as she and Nini, and their artistic collaborator, the guitarist Gil Dor, took a break from rehearsal to discuss the controversy. "That is not my vision of a Palestinian state, an extreme religious state where people they don't like are shot in the legs. And then the Israeli election went to the right." The three are preparing four songs, from which one will be selected by a panel and an audience voting at a television performance in early March. All four songs are written in equal parts Hebrew, Arabic and English, and all seek to recognize the difficulty inherent in coexistence, rather than celebrate some mythic Kumbaya. "And when I cry, I cry for both of us, my pain has no name," go the lyrics of one of their offerings. "Where can we go from here? Sister, it's been one long night," goes a second one. Awad is one of one and a half million Arab citizens of Israel's more than seven million inhabitants. There are four million more Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank and Gaza who have no state of their own. The two women have been collaborating for nearly eight years. At the height of the second intifada six years ago, they did a version of the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out" that became an international hit. Awad, the daughter of an Arab physician from the Galilee and a Bulgarian mother, lives in Tel Aviv. She is best known in Israel as an actress who appears in a popular television comedy, and has been starring lately in a searing play at the Cameri Theater in Tel Aviv about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But it is Nini who has a true international reputation. She has sold well over a million albums and has a strong following in Europe, especially in Spain, Italy and France, where she gives frequent concerts. She has a crystalline voice and, having spent her childhood in New York City, speaks flawless English and combines a number of instruments and rhythms to produce music across a broad range of styles. "I carry a cross-cultural flag, breaking barriers between religions," she said. "And I am also involved in other things — I am a UN good-will ambassador. So I feel like a kind of fusion, like Barack Obama." Nini, while admired in Israel, is more popular abroad. Her music, unlike that of most pop stars, is less a reflection of her own country's sensibility than an effort to express the universal — one reason the panel may have thought she could bring home Israel's fourth Eurovision victory in three decades. Israel's two leading television satire shows have portrayed her as more interested in Italy than Israel, and as exploiting Awad for her own needs. Awad, with her mixed parentage, is also something of a stranger in her own land, an Arab Christian singer and actress in a country dominated by Jews and Muslims. That partly explains their bond, the two women say, and it may also explain the ambivalence with which their selection has been met. But recent politics have also clearly taken their toll. During the war, Nini sent out a letter on her blog condemning the Islamists of Hamas, and calling on her "Palestinian brothers" to join together to eliminate what she called the ugly monster of Hamas. It was widely interpreted as an endorsement of Israel's war in Gaza, although she said it was not. "What I wrote was based on what my Palestinian friends in Gaza told me, that they are threatened by Hamas," she said. Both singers and their collaborator, Dor, say that they spend many hours arguing over the meaning of a Jewish democratic nation, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and how to do their part to make things better. "Everyone is responsible to put in his or her two cents for peace and coexistence," Nini said. "Our two cents is music. We have a real friendship. Of course we argue. But the beauty is that we offer an example of what coexistence could look like."

Jewish-Arab duo faces criticism ahead of songfest. By MATTI FRIEDMAN - Associated Press Writer SHMURAT HASHARON, Israel -- Israel is sending a Jewish-Arab duo to represent it with a song of peace at Europe's best-known song competition at a particularly fraught moment for relations between the country's Jews and Arabs. Not surprisingly, the choice has sparked criticism and debate with a gravity that couldn't be further from the Eurovision competition itself, a festival of flamboyant pop and unapologetic kitsch which draws some 100 million TV viewers every year. Achinoam Nini, a regular on the world music scene known internationally as Noa, and Mira Awad, a local actress and singer, were selected by Israel's national broadcasting authority. Their selection came a day after Israel launched its Gaza offensive in December to halt rocket fire by Hamas militants. Israel is sending a Jewish-Arab duo to represent it with a song of peace at Europe's best-known song competition, just after one of the bloodiest rounds of Israeli-Palestinian fighting and at a particularly fraught moment for relations between the country's Jews and Arabs. Awad, who will be the first Arab ever to represent Israel at the competition, was roundly criticized for agreeing to go and became the subject of a petition organized by Israeli Arab artists who said sending her and Nini, a veteran peace activist, was a deliberate attempt to portray Israel as something it is not. In an interview between rehearsals at Nini's home, the two singers said they would nonetheless appear at the contest, slated to be held in Moscow in May. They are working on four songs, each in English, Arabic and Hebrew. One will be chosen in a national broadcast next month as Israel's official entry. When her manager called to tell her she had been selected, Awad said, she was glued to coverage of the Gaza fighting. "I said, 'OK, OK,' and I closed the phone just to keep watching the TV," she said. At the time, the Gaza death toll was climbing steeply. It eventually reached 1,300, according to Gaza health officials, at least half of them civilians. Israeli Arabs held angry protests condemning the offensive, which ended Jan. 18. "The situation is very depressing and very complex now, and we understand that it might seem to some people a bit cynical ... sending a Jewish singer alongside a Palestinian singer," Awad said. She said she was going to make the point that Jews and Arabs had no option but to find some way to live together. "It's very important for me not to go back to the corner and just disappear," she said. Awad's career suggests a sunnier take on Arab life in Israel. Raised in an Arab town in Galilee but now a resident of overwhelmingly Jewish Tel Aviv, she has achieved mainstream popularity, becoming a sought-after television and stage actress. Last year, after she starred in the country's first Arabic sitcom aimed at Jewish viewers, a breathless profile in a Hebrew paper crowned her "the new Arab woman." Around a fifth of Israel's 7 million citizens are Arabs. They have equal rights under the law but face discrimination in government budgets and employment, and have poverty rates higher than those of the country's Jews. Relations have been further strained by the Gaza offensive. Some Arab lawmakers have openly identified with Israel's enemies, and last week, a Jewish party with an overtly anti-Arab platform saw its support surge in a national election and became the third-largest grouping in parliament. "The Israeli government is sending the two of you to Moscow as part of its propaganda machine, which is trying to create the appearance of Jewish-Arab 'coexistence' under which it carries out the daily massacre of Palestinian civilians," read the petition targeting Nini and Awad. One of the signatories was Mohammad Bakri, a well-known Israeli Arab actor and director who has been critical of the Israeli government. "I don't want Mira to be used," he said. "It's not a big honor to represent Israel right now in the Eurovision. It's a shame, in my point of view." The Israeli officials responsible for the choice say both were selected on their merits as artists. Nini was picked because she is the best-known Israeli singer in Europe, said Yoav Ginai, the Israel Broadcasting Authority official in charge of the committee, and Nini suggested that Awad sing with her. The committee thought that was a "great idea," he said. Israel won the Eurovision contest twice in the 1970s, and then again in 1998 with a song called "Diva," performed by the country's best-known transsexual. Nini, an Israeli of Yemenite extraction who grew up in New York, sees the competition as a "stage where we can stand and have millions of people watch and listen." "Some people will see an Arab girl who looks Jewish and a Jewish girl who looks Arab, which is what we are, she said. "Maybe it will open some people's minds."

12 de febrero de 2009.- La historia de Noa y Mira Awad, ese minicombo femenino, multiétnico y bilateral que representará a Israel en Eurovisión si Yahvé y Alá quieren, muy bien podría dar para el argumento de una comedia digna del genial Billy Wilder. De no ser algo tan serio. Que lo es. Y mucho. De Noa, israelí con trazas de palestina, ya sabíamos que gusta desde hace años de tender puentes interculturales a favor de la paz. Lo cual es de agradecer, sobre todo por la falta de artistas locales dispuestos a mediar en aquel berenjenal y a colaborar, como hace ella, con cantantes árabes y palestinos de la talla de Khaled, Nabil Salameh, Handallah o Amal Murkus. A eso se le llama valentía. De Mira Awad, cantautora palestina con pinta de supermodelo israelí, la otra mitad del dúo eurovisivo, sabemos ahora que con su aportación representará a los 1,5 millones de palestinos que viven en Israel como ciudadanos de Israel. Eso, con la que está cayendo en la Franja de Gaza, también es un acto de valor muy a tener en cuenta. Muchos dirán que este tipo de alianzas musicales, por más repletas de buenas intenciones que estén, nunca sirven de nada. Que caen en saco roto. Al igual que toda aquella iniciativa que pretenda paliar los daños colaterales de esa Guerra Nada Santa, quizás porque allí se cruzan intereses de toda índole y condición. Lo único que sacarán Noa y Mira de todo esto son problemas. Como los que ya tienen, de hecho. Sobre ambas recaen los sapos y culebras de una campaña mediática que hace de ellas dos mujeres al borde de un ataque de fundamentalistas sin ningún fundamento. Merecerá la pena asomarse a lo que ocurra este año en Moscú (¡que por mayo, era por mayo!, ¡el 16!), aunque sólo sea para rendirse ante dos artistas que han decidido jugársela por minimizar las catastróficas desdichas que asolan a su país. Nos iría a todos mejor si actuásemos así: mojándonos. Por eso les deseo, a ambas, lo mejor. Por darnos una lección a todos en estos tiempos de miedo, asco e idiotez. Mientras tanto, por aquí seguimos igual que siempre, si no peor, en materias eurovisivas. Es decir, enfangados hasta el tuétano de la gilipollez y viendo cómo deshojan una margarita llamada Banalidad. De casting en casting y tiro porque me toca. Con un jurado de juzgado de guardia: José Luis 'Perrea Perrea' Uribarri, Toni Garrido, Mauro Canut y Mariola Orellana. Y sin saber aún quién será el afortunado en representarnos de una puñetera vez. ¡Manda 'webs'! ¿Melody o Soraya? No lo sé. Ni me importa. Quizá haya sorpresas. Pero yo las deseo, a ambas, lo peor.
